Etymology
"Gackpo"
is based on the pronunciation of the name "Gackt". The software name
of "Gackpoid" also takes its name from Gackt's own. The
"poid" on the end of the name is short for "like VOCALOID".
Consequently, the full implied name of this product is "Gackt-like
VOCALOID". However, the spelling of his name can vary. For example, at the
Karen-T website, his name is often also seen written as "Camui
Gackpo". Other spellings of his name have also been witnessed from other
sources.
Appearance
The
avatar of the software was drawn by the illustrator Kentaro Miura (三浦健太郎 Miura
Kentaro). A
note from Crypton Future Media's VOCALOIDs was that they were using cyber-style
clothes which can "melt into" our everyday lives as much as possible.
Internet co., Ltd drew up their own ideas from this on what makes VOCALOID
popular. Gackpo's look was picked from several possible designs.
Gackpo
has a samurai aesthetic: the VOCALOID is clad in a Jinbaori, a kind of kimono which was used as a battle surcoat, with
parts of Japanese armor, and carries a katana which is named
“Music katana, Miburi” (楽刀・美振 /
Gakutou Miburi). The patterns on its blade make musical sounds when it is swung
down. The sword existed because producers wanted a link to a musical
instrument, there were no objections to the use of a weapon.
When
considering the features of Gackpo, the producers informed them they wanted the
eyes to look like Gackt's, and for his outfit to include a combination of cyber
and traditional Japanese-styled clothing. The colours were picked to make him
stand out from the other VOCALOIDs.
The
symbol on the back of both Gackpo's fan and shirt/jacket is a stylized version
of the kanji for "music" which is "楽". In
romaji format, this is
literally spoken and read as "gaku",
which is most likely a pun on both the avatar's naming and the literal form of "楽" which
can stand for "musician"
after being changed into "楽人".
Gackpo
is one of the few VOCALOIDs to see his most popular Meme make it into
merchandise form. The "eggplant", or rather the version with
stick-legs, is an additional item included with his Nendoroid figurine.
History
In
early August 2013, a new update for galaco was shown and a demo song released
for galaco's next project. Users who were given their free codes to extend
galaco's usage were asked to keep hold of them for future reference.
In
October 2013, it was confirmed galaco would be due for a spring 2014 release
and that there would also be a VOCALOID
NEO version.
The
new version contains two new vocals, "Red" and "Blue", with
"Red" being similar to the original vocal. A trial version
of both vocals was made available as a bonus DVD included with the purchase of
the re-released galaco SUPER BEST album on February 19, 2014.
On
July 9, 2014, galaco NEO's new design and release date was revealed. Her
package was to also be bundled with galaco Talk software, which uses the AITalk
engine. Galaco NEO was set to be available to download on her
birthday, August 5. The download price will be 16,000 Japanese Yen.
On
July 13, 2014, it was announced that visitors to the VOC@LOID M@STER
(ボーマス) 29 event may be able to get a
trial of galaco if they visit her booth.

MEIKO, originally codenamed
"HANAKO", is a Japanese VOCALOID originally developed by Yamaha Corporation and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc., and was initially
released in November 2004 for the first VOCALOID engine. There has
since been a second installment developed for the VOCALOID3 engine, dubbed MEIKO
V3.
Her voice is provided by the Japanese female singer, Meiko
Haigō (拝郷 メイコ Haigo Meiko).
Etymology
"MEIKO"
comes directly from her voice provider's name, "Haigo Meiko."
"Megumi"
was also a name that was considered during her development.
Appearance
The
illustration was done by Shogo Washizu, often called わっしー(Wasshi), a
former member of Crypton. Crypton
placed this product on the market with a box art that depicted a female
illustrated character. This character had nothing to do with the singer's
image, but her anime-based appearance appealed to the mainstream audience and
the software sold well. Wat even stated how
different the intention of the CV series and KAITO/MEIKO were during the
development of KAITO V3. This even led to the direction of the updates leading
to a completely different course of development compared to the Appends of Hatsune Miku, Kagamine
Rin/Len, and Megurine Luka.
MEIKO's
boxart hides the front of her red sleeveless jacket, it is difficult to tell
what design it consists of. Due to this factor, there are many different
designs, even for official artwork. There is no official given age. Although,
in Maker Hikōshiki
Hatsune Mix
she is usually portrayed as a middle-aged woman by KEI, who mentioned in a
magazine interview that what he depicts in the comic is not official.
Spurned
on by the items held by Hatsune Miku and KAITO, it became popular to feature MEIKO with One
Cup Ozeki (sake).

SeeU (시유) is a Korean VOCALOID developed and distributed by SBS Artech Co,. Ltd., and was released in October 2011 for South Korea and later in December for Japan. Her voice is provided by Korean female singer, Dahee Kim, a member of the K-Pop idol group, 'GLAM'. Dahee recorded in Korean and Japanese for the two voicebanks.
Etymology
Her
name in Korean is rendered as "시유" (Siyu) and in
Japanese it is "シユ" (Shiyu). During an interview
with SBS Artech manager, Hyo Eun Kim, it was said that SeeU's name came to mind
after thinking of a line from the 2009 film, Avatar. The line "I
See You" popped into her mind and became the inspiration for 'SeeU'.
According to SBS, this is only one of several meanings of her name.
Appearance
SeeU
was given a moe-esque design and is aimed
more specifically to the general and Vocaloid Otaku fandom. SBS stated that
SeeU was created to be a "cute and lively yet mysterious looking 17 year
old girl." Her outfit was designed with a school uniform in mind. Her
official illustrations and design was created by KKUEM.
Her
cat ears/nekomimi are speakers. According to her illustrator, they are actually
detachable. Her neckband is a CD player. Soundwaves light up on the rectangle
of her flat-shoes and on the upper part of her top (chest). There's a pause
button at the back of her clothes, a power button on the ribbon of her neckband
and an "on" button on one of the buttons at the front of her top.
During a virtual interview starring SeeU conducted by SBS Artech, SeeU revealed
her clothing size to be XXS.

GUMI (グミ) is a Japanese VOCALOID developed and distributed by Internet Co., Ltd.. as Megpoid (メグッポイド), and was initially released June 2009 for the VOCALOID2 engine. There has since been three installments developed for the VOCALOID3 engine, one that includes an update of the VOCALOID2 voice bank. Her voice is provided by Filipino-Japanese female singer, Megumi Nakajima (中島 愛; Nakajima Megumi).
GUMI
was the second VOCALOID to be released by the company Internet Co., Ltd and had
a more retro-futuristic approach than Gackpo
had.
Etymology
The
name Gumi is the voice provider Megumi Nakajima's nickname from her childhood. The software name, "Megpoid",
was taken from the provider's name "Megumi." The second half, the
"poid", is short for "like Vocaloid," the full implied name
of this product is a "Megumi-like Vocaloid."
Appearance
The
original avatar character of the software was drawn by the illustrator Masami
Yuuki (ゆうきまさみ Yuuki
Masami).
Her design is often said to be influenced by Ranka Lee's character (one of
the first roles done by Megumi Nakajima as Seiyuu). Ranka Lee's most main
outfit (which she wears for the notable song Seikan Hikou) had the colors
green, yellow, and orange. This has never been confirmed as anything more than
coincidence, but still is a popular assumption with both Japanese and overseas
Vocaloid fans. Her belt buckle, incorporates the Tenori-on devices design.
GUMI's
Megpoid English illustration has a different direction to the past GUMI
illustrations. Concerning GUMI's age, during the Extend development, Noboru
once tweeted that it was preferred there was a rough age set for GUMI at
teenager stage. However, no overall set age was ever made for GUMI in her
various designs. When writing about the Extend, it was noted the voice could be
considered extensions of the age conceptualization for GUMI.

IA (イア) is a Japanese VOCALOID developed and distributed by 1st Place Co., Ltd., and was released in January 2012 for the VOCALOID3 engine. Her voice is provided by the Japanese female singer, Lia, known for "Tori no Uta".
Etymology
"IA"
is taken from her voice provider's name, "Lia". There are at least
two ways to read her sub-title of "- ARIA ON
THE PLANETES -":
The
words "Aria" and "Planetes" are Latin and Greek for
"open space" and "planet" respectively, giving the
translation of "Open Space on the Planet".
"Aria",
is also the Italian word for "air" and was used as a term in opera
for expressive pieces, usually sung by a single singer.
Appearance
Her
design was illustrated by Aka Akasaka (D. Z.), while the design direction was
by Maxilla Inc. Despite the myth of IA's age being 15, she has had
no age assigned to her. This myth seems to originate from a section underneath
the paragraph on IA about her provider Lia, wherein one of the first things
mentioned was that Lia debuted in America at 15 years old.

SF-A2 codename miki (SF-A2 開発コード miki), is a Japanese
VOCALOID developed and distributed by AH-Software Co. Ltd., and was released in
December 2009 for the VOCALOID2 engine. Her voice is
provided by the Japanese female singer, Miki
Furukawa
(フルカワミキ / 古川 美季; Furukawa Miki).
Etymology
Often
shortened to just "SF-A2 miki", her codename of "miki"
comes from her provider's name "Miki Furukawa". In Japanese,
'codename' or 'development code' translates as 'kaihatsu koudo'. The meaning of
the "SF-A2" part of her name has never been stated.
Appearance
Her
design was unique among the Vocaloids. She had no references to YAMAHA based
musical instruments like other Vocaloids and was designsed to look cybernetic.
According
to information that came from the 2012 redesign, Miki was designed to look like
she was made out of a inorganic material and was conceptualized as an android.
Her body is designed to look like that of a child, but also give her the
overall appearance of a young teenage female. Though she is an android, she is
covered in muscles made from various materials such as carbon nanotubes, but
were made loose to give a mild deformed look about them. Having an
immature-looking body allowed her to appear younger then she looks, similar to
how Miku and Rin could do the same.

CUL (カル) is a Japanese
VOCALOID developed and distributed by Internet Co., Ltd., and was created in
collaboration with VOCALO Revolution. CUL is their mascot
character and she was released as a VOCALOID in December 2011 for the VOCALOID3 engine. Her voice is
provided by Japanese female voice actress, Eri
Kitamura
(喜多村 英梨; Kitamura
Eri).
She is a "Character
Voice"
type vocal.
Originally,
CUL was released without background information. However, the information was
posted for her in 2013 when she was featured in a special event.
CUL
was first introduced as the mascot for the show, VOCALO Revolution.
Etymology
The
name "CUL" has double meanings, short for "culture" and
"Culnoza", a collaborative group organized by Hiroto-P.

KAITO, originally codenamed
"TARO", is a Japanese VOCALOID developed originally by Yamaha Corporation and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc., and was initially
released in February 2006 for the first VOCALOID engine. There has
since been a second installment developed for the VOCALOID3 engine dubbed KAITO
V3.
His voice is provided by the famous Japanese singer, Naoto
Fūga (風雅 なおと).
Etymology
The
product's name was invited to be chosen by the public, and "KAITO"
was selected from among the applicants, which was Shu-tP's offered idea. One
of the reasons why his name "KAITO" was selected was because it would
be easy for non-Japanese speakers to pronounce, and it looked fitting with the
name "MEIKO" when they were put next to one another.
Appearance
The
illustration was done by Takashi Kawasaki. Crypton did not set his character
and profile except for his package design. Like MEIKO, he was not made with the
aim of giving character or personality to vocal synthesis software. This was also emphasized during the
development of the V3 vocal banks, with Wat stating how different the intention
of the CV series was to the intention of KAITO and MEIKO. This led to the
updates taking a totally different course of development in comparison to the
Appends of Miku, Len, Rin and Luka.
KAITO's
muffler has become one of his most iconic items. During his V3 update, there
was fan outcry over the idea of it being made transparent. In answer to this,
Crypton stated that cloth can be made out of anything, including plastic; there
was a lot more freedom with it than many realized.
KAITO has no official given age. However, in Maker Hikōshiki Hatsune Mix he is usually portrayed as a middle aged man by KEI. Despite this, what the artist depicts in the comic is not official, as he mentioned in a magazine interview.
Because
of the story of his rediscovery in 2008, KAITO was often depicted with ice cream.
This gave birth to the "Item War" Internet
Meme
tradition.

and was initially released in August 2010 for the VOCALOID2
engine. There has since been a second installment developed for the VOCALOID3
engine and dubbed V3 Lily. Her voice is provided by the Japanese female singer,
Yuri
Masuda (益田 祐里; Masuda
Yuri).
She
represents Yuri's anime-persona or avatar for anim.o.v.e.'s
releases.
Lily
is one of the few VOCALOIDs outside of those made by Crypton Future Media to have referenced the
most popular Internet Memes. As part of her marketing, two
figurines were made, one of them being her with a railway sign that referenced
"Ievan Polkka" while the one was her with a bee.
Etymology
Early
speculation on Lily's given name was that it was derived from the name of her
voice provider Yuri Masuda, as "yuri" literally means
"lily".

Ring Suzune (リング・スズネ) is a Japanese VOCALOID whose
current development status was unknown. Due to the lack of activity by VOCALOID
NEXT, the project involving Ring and Lui is presumed cancelled.
Her
voice is provided by MiKA
of the band Daisy x Daisy and was intended to be a "Character
Voice" type Vocaloid.
History
In
2011 the "Everyone's Vocaloid project" (みんなのボカロ計画 / Minna
no Bokaro Keikaku) contest was held. Entries from within Japan and overseas
were allowed. In late May 2011, the winning contestants were picked out of the
thousands of entries. This was one of two designs selected, which were
announced at Vocaloid Festa 02.
Ring
was originally set to be released in Fall/Winter 2011. She
is confirmed VOCALOID3, so this meant she would not be released before late
September; this is when the VOCALOID3 engine is released. A demo has been
uploaded onto Nico Nico Douga and on Youtube alongside Miku.
A
release date of December 12, 2011 was initially confirmed, but Ring has not yet
been released. It is now unknown when she will be released. In 2012, VocaNext
picked up her voicebank to continue development.
In
February 2012, a beta version of Ring Suzune's voicebank was offered to the
participants of "Vocaloid Network", a small-scale fan event scheduled
on March 11, 2012. As the number of fan groups which participated the event was
only 19, it is considered that only a small number of people received the beta
copy, though it was sent to all those interested. Trial use of the beta version
was limited to a month.
In
late 2013, the VocaNext website became inaccessible making the status of this
vocal, as well as Hibiki Lui, unknown.
Concept
The
idea of Ring and Lui was to improve the Vocaloid culture by bridging the gap
between fan concept and offical products. Therefore, both were intended to be
fan made designs for original Vocaloids that became official ones. She was
described as "Light-hearted, doesn’t have high aspirations, but she’s
hard-working."
Etymology
Her
official name is in the western order. Her original name in the contest was
called "Ring Suzunone" (鈴音リング / Suzunone
Ringu; "Bell-Sound Ring").
Appearance
She
has a "Ring" gimmick, hence her name, in the original artwork she had
rings all over her body. Ring's outfit is based on a maid's outfit. The design
of her headset is based on a piano. It is also meant to be reminder of a memory
plug.

Hibiki Lui (ヒビキルイ) is a Japanese VOCALOID whose
development status was unknown. Due to the lack of activity by VOCALOID NEXT,
the project involving Lui and Ring is presumed cancelled.
History
In
2011 the "Everyone's Vocaloid project" (みんなのボカロ計画 / Min-na
no Bokaro Keikaku) contest was held. Both entries from within Japan and
overseas were allowed. In late May 2011, the contestants were picked out of the
thousands of entries. This was one of two designs selected, they were announced
at Vocaloid Festa 02.
Lui's
release schedule was originally set to be Winter/Spring 2012. Prior to this, in
Summer 2012, voice providers both male and female were being interviewed for a
suitable voice. However, this has come to past, due to financial reasons for
both Ring and Lui. The focus is now primarily Ring, with Lui's current
development status being unknown.
In
late 2013, the VocaNext website became inaccessible making the status of this
vocal, as well as Ring Suzune, unknown.
Concept
The
idea of Ring and Lui was to improve the Vocaloid culture by bridging the gap
between fan concept and official products. Therefore, both were intended to be
fan made designs for original Vocaloids that became official ones.
Like
the Kagamines, he and Ring are based on "R and
L".
Etymology
He
was originally drawn by Yuukari (ユーカリ) and was
just known as "Lui" (ルイ / Rui).
It is suspected, but not proven the name might have meant to be or based on
"Louis". Due to the fickleness of translating the name into Japanese,
it was not correctly written in the original concept art. His surname, Hibiki,
can mean "sound" or "echo".
Appearance
Lui
was described as being "easily mistaken for a girl because of his graceful
manners."
Marketing
Both
Ring and Lui are marketed as fan-based Vocaloids having had their mascots
designed by fans in a competition. The image was then refined into the final
look by a professional artist. Lui appeared on early VOCALOID3
merchandise, but has since appeared on no further merchandise.

and distributed by Ki/oon Records Inc., under Sony Music Entertainment Japan,
and was released in December 2010 for the VOCALOID2
engine. His voice is provided by the Japanese male singer, PIKO.
Etymology
His
surname, "Utatane", means "sound of singer", while
"Piko" is the name of his voice provider, a popular Nico Nico Douga
singer; in other words, his name means "sound of singer Piko".
Appearance
Utatane
Piko's hairstyle is almost identical to the real Piko's hairstyle, the only
difference being a cowlick on top of his head that is shaped like the letter
"P". The white hair color is likely inspired by several depicted
artworks of the singer.
